Discovering the Unexpected Waves
When most folks think of surfing, they picture Hawaii’s North Shore or Californ
ia’s endless coastline. Very few imagine paddling out in New York City.
But tucked away in the far reaches of Queens is Rockaway Beach—one of the rare spots in the five boroughs where you can actually surf. And it’s not just a novelty wave. On the right day, Rockaway serves up real, rideable surf that attracts both locals and travelers with boards strapped to their car roofs. Just this week, Hurricane Erin brought some excitement to the waves.
I captured this scene early in the morning when the sun was still low, casting a golden haze over the Atlantic. Two surfers stood ankle-deep in the water, boards in hand, watching the sets roll in. Behind them, the fishing jetties jutted into the shoreline, and in the distance, the city’s silhouette softened by morning light.
A Quick Escape Between Flights
I was between flights in and out of JFK, which is just a stone's throw away. So, I decided to take a little time to explore the Oceanfront of Queens.
What I love about Rockaway is the beautiful collision of worlds. It’s where the city meets the ocean, sharing the same frame. You can hear the distant hum of the A train, then cross over to the sand, where the train’s noise is drowned out by the rolling surf. After that, it’s back across the street to grab a bagel.
The Charm of Rockaway Beach
This wasn’t a high-surf day, but that’s part of Rockaway’s charm. It’s a place where surfers gather not just for the size of the waves but for the ritual of being in the water before the city fully wakes up. The tide, the light, and the rhythm of the ocean set the pace for a little while, just before the rest of the day rushes in.
Rockaway Beach is a unique blend of urban life and nature. You can feel the energy of the city while enjoying the tranquility of the ocean. It’s a reminder that even in a bustling metropolis, there are pockets of peace and beauty waiting to be discovered.
Why Rockaway Beach is Special
Rockaway Beach offers more than just surfing. It’s a vibrant community filled with art, music, and culture. The boardwalk is lined with charming eateries and shops, making it a perfect spot to spend a day. Whether you’re catching waves or simply soaking up the sun, there’s something for everyone.
A Place for Everyone
Families, friends, and solo adventurers all find their place here. You can see kids building sandcastles, couples strolling hand in hand, and surfers waiting for the perfect wave. It’s a melting pot of experiences, and that’s what makes it so special.
The Local Vibe
The locals are friendly and welcoming. They’re always happy to share tips on the best surf spots or the tastiest places to grab a bite. The sense of community is palpable, and it adds to the overall charm of Rockaway Beach.
Capturing the Moment
As a photographer, I’m always on the lookout for unique moments to capture. Rockaway Beach provides endless opportunities for stunning shots. The interplay of light, water, and cityscape creates a visual feast.
